Ordino — The Muleteers' Oath

Andorra la Vella keeps the secrets of its past as a Pyrenean crossroads at the Pont de la Margineda, built in the 12th century. This Romanesque bridge with a single arch, 33 meters long, was the only safe passage over the Valira for caravans loaded with Catalan iron and Cardona salt. Joan Areny met his French contacts there, exchanging news of the War of the League of Augsburg that had been ravaging Europe since 1688. This square was the gathering point for caravans before climbing to the passes, notably the Port d'Envalira which peaks at 2,408 meters. Muleteers checked their loads of Roussillon textiles and Mediterranean spices, precious goods that justified the risks of the journey. Casa de la Vall, visible from the square, already housed the archives of the neutrality oath signed in 1278 by Roger-Bernard III of Foix and Pere d'Urtx, Bishop of Urgell.

Església de Sant Esteve, built in the 12th century then remodeled in the 16th, was the mandatory spiritual stop for muleteers before their departure to dangerous passes. Joan Areny prayed there to Saint James, patron of travelers, before the baroque altarpiece installed in 1621. This Romanesque church preserves 12th-century frescoes depicting Christ in majesty, witnesses to the sacred art that united Pyrenean valleys despite political borders. Muleteers left their offerings there, often silver coins minted in Puigcerdà or Perpignan workshops.

Carrer Major was the commercial artery where muleteers sold their goods to Andorra la Vella's bourgeoisie. This paved street housed blacksmith shops that repaired mule shoes, rope makers who braided pack saddle straps, and innkeepers who lodged caravan drivers. Joan Areny negotiated there with Pere Moles, a wealthy Andorran merchant who financed expeditions to Toulouse and Barcelona. The granite houses with sculpted lintels mostly date from the 17th century, when cross-border trade enriched Andorra's patrician families.

Your journey ends at Plaça del Poble, where Joan Areny discovers that the muleteers' oath was not a document, but an oral tradition passed down through generations. This modern square, built in 1991 for the 700th anniversary of the Paréages, symbolizes the continuity of Andorran independence.
