In 1993, a team of Russian archaeologists led by Natalia Polosmak discovered a kurgan (burial mound) on the Ukok Plateau, an isolated and windy site in southern Siberia. What makes this discovery unique is the natural mummification and exceptional preservation due to permafrost. Inside the tomb, the mummy of a young woman, about 25 years old, richly adorned and tattooed, was surrounded by six bridled horses, a bronze mirror, gold jewelry, and a small bag of cannabis. She was quickly dubbed the 'Princess of Altai,' although her exact status remains debated.
The princess belonged to the Pazyryk culture, a Scythian people who flourished in the Altai Mountains between the 6th and 3rd centuries BC. Known for their equestrian skills, distinctive animal art, and elaborate funerary practices, the Pazyryk lived a nomadic or semi-nomadic existence. Their frozen kurgans allowed for the preservation of not only human and animal remains but also textiles, wood, and other organic materials, offering an unprecedented window into their way of life and spiritual beliefs, including the importance of tattoos as symbols of status and protection.
