Your quest for hidden graves begins near the first tee of the Old Course in St Andrews, a symbolic starting point before delving into the tumultuous history of the Scottish Reformation of 1560. The route will quickly lead you to the remains of St Andrews Cathedral, founded in 1160. This cathedral, Scotland's main one until its partial ruin in 1559-1560, was the scene of destruction by reformers. Here, on the 4 hectares of ruins, the 12th-century St Rule's Church tower, 33 meters high, overlooks the adjacent cemetery where Protestant victims of the 16th century rest. It was near these gates that Patrick Hamilton was burned in 1528, the first of a long line of martyrs.
A short walk away, St Andrews Castle, built around 1200, stands as a silent witness to the persecutions. This castle served as a prison and a site for the trials of Protestant reformers in the 16th century. It was within its walls that George Wishart was imprisoned before his martyrdom by strangulation and burning in 1546. The remains of the siege mines and counter-mines from 1546-1547, measuring up to 10 meters deep, are still visible and tell of the efforts to free or besiege prisoners. This site, just 1 km from the Old Course, is a key monument to understanding the brutality of the era.
The Martyrs' Monument, erected in 1843 in the cathedral cemetery, is an essential place of remembrance. This monument, listed as a Category A historic site by Historic Scotland, commemorates the Protestant reformers executed between 1528 and 1559. It houses a collective tomb with inscriptions listing 28 martyrs, including Walter Myln, burned in 1558. Located 800m from the Old Course via North Street, this site allows you to visualize the extent of the sacrifices made for the Protestant cause in the town of St Andrews.
Your journey then takes you to Holy Trinity Church, a parish church founded in 1412. It was within these walls that John Knox, leader of the Scottish Reformation, preached fervently against Catholicism in 1559. Its 15th-century bell tower, 35 meters high, is a visible landmark from the town center. It was also on this site that Paul Craw was hanged in 1557, by order of Cardinal Beaton, another reformed martyr whose story still resonates in the town of Fife. Not far away, St Salvator's Chapel, founded in 1450 by Bishop James Kennedy, housed theological controversies and the tombs of early reformed figures.
Finally, your exploration leads you to the West Port, built between 1587 and 1600 as St Andrews' last fortified gate. Near these gardens, reformed martyrs were held and gallows used for Protestant executions in the 16th century. Classified as a Category A historic monument, the West Port, 1.2 km from the Old Course via Market Street, marks the limit of your walking tour and the end of your documentation. You will take from St Andrews the living memory of the Reformation, a crucial chapter in Scotland's history, inscribed in Fife's heritage and its monuments on a UNESCO tentative list.
