Founded in 1916, Murmansk quickly became a major strategic port, especially during World War II. As the only year-round ice-free deep-water Soviet port in the European Arctic, it served as the primary reception point for Allied Arctic convoys, notably the PQ and JW convoys, which transported millions of tons of vital supplies (tanks, aircraft, ammunition, food) to the Soviet Union under the Lend-Lease program.
These convoys operated under extreme conditions, facing Arctic storms, polar night, and a constant threat from German U-boats and bombers based in Norway. The route was so perilous that it was dubbed the 'Cemetery of the North Atlantic'. Convoy PQ-17, in particular, is infamous for the colossal losses sustained in July 1942, when 24 out of 35 merchant ships were sunk after being dispersed by a controversial order in the face of the threat from the German battleship Tirpitz.
