In the treacherous Rhine Gorge of Sankt Goarshausen, the Lorelei rock looms 132 meters high, whispering doom to passing ships
You are Saint Goar, the Irish hermit who founded the local cult, in the 6th century Middle Rhine Valley, tasked with protecting boatmen from the Rhine's perils.
Your mission
Uncover the millennial mystery of the Lorelei, the mythological siren haunting the Romantic Rhine's waters since the 13th century.
Your quest for the Lorelei's secret begins at Mäuseturm, the Mouse Tower, in Bingen am Rhein. This watchtower, built around 1220 on an island in the Rhine, served as a river toll and surveillance post. Local legend, documented since the 11th century, tells of Prince-Bishop Hatto II being devoured by mice there. Although this tale is apocryphal, the Mäuseturm, restored in the 19th century in a Neo-Gothic style, remains a strong visual landmark, foreshadowing the Rhenish castles you will explore and the history of the Romantic Rhine Valley.
The route then takes you to St. Martin Kirche in Oberwesel, a Gothic church built between 1331 and 1503. Its two 65-meter towers rise above the Rhine, testifying to the medieval opulence of this section of the Romantic Rhine, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. Inside, Jost Haller's altarpiece, dating from 1515, is a masterpiece of Rhenish Gothic sculpture, restored in the 20th century. This Rhineland-Palatinate site, about 8 km upstream from Sankt Goarshausen, illustrates the artistic and spiritual richness of the valley before the arrival of legends like that of the Lorelei.
In Sankt Goar, you walk along the Rheinanlagen, the river promenade developed in the 20th century, offering viewpoints over the river. From there, you can see the imposing ruins of Burg Rheinfels, a fortress built in 1245 by Count Diether V of Katzenelnbogen. This construction was one of the largest in the Middle Ages, with an underground tunnel system and bastioned fortifications. Partially destroyed in 1796 during the French Revolution, it was restored in the 19th century. The site, 1.5 km from Sankt Goar, is a testament to the feudal power of the region and a key point of your outdoor escape game.
Your itinerary then leads you to Loreleyfelsen, the Lorelei Rock, the valley's highest point at 132 meters above the Rhine. This site, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2002, is at the heart of the legend of a siren who lured boatmen to their doom, a story documented since the 13th century. In Sankt Goarshausen, the Loreley Visitor Center is the official starting point for the 'Secret of the Lorelei' escape game. From there, Burg Katz (Cat Castle), built in 1371 by Count Jean de Katzenelnbogen opposite Rheinfels, dominates the landscape at 170 meters high, illustrating the feudal rivalry that animated this part of Rhineland-Palatinate.
As you complete your journey through the Romantic Rhine Valley, you pass by the St. Goar Stiftskirche, the Collegiate Church of Sankt Goar. Founded in the 7th century and dedicated to the hermit Saint Goar, the church houses his relics and was a medieval pilgrimage site attested since the 12th century. Its late Gothic architecture (15th-16th centuries) with its vaulted choir and Renaissance altarpiece, grounds you in tangible history, far from myths. Finally, the Loreleyblick Maria Ruh, a viewpoint in Urbar, offers a clear view of the Loreley Rock and the bend in the Rhine. After this interactive visit of the Rhenish castles and legendary sites, you will take with you not only the secret of the Lorelei, but also a deep understanding of the region's world cultural heritage, from precise dates to the figures who shaped this unique landscape.

Yes, from age 6 with an adult reading puzzles aloud, and from age 12 on their own. Kids love the "find the camera clue" part — it's very visual, gets them genuinely involved.
Intermittent 4G is plenty. Maps are cached at startup. Narration and clues load per stop, so a so-so signal between stops is fine. GPS itself uses no data.
