The Wairau Affray: Hidden Truths of a Historical Conflict
« The land is ours. We have not sold it. »— Te Rauparaha, chef Ngāti Toa, 1843
The early 1840s marked a period of extreme tension in New Zealand. The New Zealand Company, eager to establish European settlements, claimed vast tracts of land, often based on controversial purchases or deep cultural misunderstandings. Despite the Treaty of Waitangi signed in 1840, which guaranteed Māori sovereignty over their lands, the company continued its aggressive acquisition practices, particularly in the rich Wairau Valley, near Nelson. Ngāti Toa chiefs, Te Rauparaha and his nephew Te Rangihaeata, categorically rejected the company's claims, stating they had never sold these lands.
On June 17, 1843, these tensions culminated. An armed expedition of settlers, led by Captain Arthur Wakefield of the New Zealand Company and Magistrate Henry Thompson, departed from Nelson to arrest Te Rauparaha and Te Rangihaeata, accused of destroying a surveyor's hut. The ensuing confrontation on the banks of the Wairau River was bloody. Twenty-two settlers, including Wakefield and Thompson, were killed, as were several Māori. This event, the 'Wairau Affray', was the first major armed conflict between Māori and Pākehā (Europeans) after the treaty, and it had profound repercussions on racial relations and colonial land policy for decades to come.

Yes, from age 6 with an adult reading puzzles aloud, and from age 12 on their own. Kids love the "find the camera clue" part — it's very visual, gets them genuinely involved.
