The Holy Ampoule, Joan of Arc, and 33 coronations
📱 1 to 10 phones · 1 team per phone · Independent codes
Thirty-three kings of France were crowned in Reims. The Holy Ampoule, containing sacred oil sent by God, was smashed during the Revolution. But was it really? Joan of Arc brought Charles VII here in 1429 — and the secret of the Ampoule may have survived thanks to her.
Reims Cathedral is the most sacred place of the French monarchy. For eight centuries, from Louis VIII to Charles X, the kings of France were crowned here with oil from the Holy Ampoule — a vial that legend says was brought from heaven by a dove during the baptism of Clovis in 496. This ritual made the king a quasi-divine being. The Revolution smashed the Ampoule in public — but witnesses claim the parish priest of Saint-Remi saved fragments of it.

« "Gentle Dauphin, come to Reims to receive your worthy coronation." »— — Joan of Arc to Charles VII, 1429
In 496, Clovis, King of the Franks, was baptized in Reims by Bishop Remigius. Legend tells that a dove descended from heaven carrying a vial of holy oil. This Holy Ampoule became the sacred foundation of the French monarchy — only the oil of Reims could make a legitimate king.
In 1429, Joan of Arc, after liberating Orléans, led Charles VII to Reims for his coronation. It was the decisive act that legitimized the king against the English claim. The Smiling Angel of the cathedral, a masterpiece of Gothic sculpture, is said to have smiled at Joan that day.
On October 7, 1793, the Convention ordered the destruction of the Holy Ampoule. Representative Rühl smashed it in the public square. But Father Louis Seraine is said to have secretly taken fragments before the ceremony. These fragments were used for the coronation of Charles X in 1825 — the last coronation in the History of France.
