In 1920, the 18th Amendment to the US Constitution established Prohibition, banning the manufacture, sale, and transportation of alcohol. But for Detroit, this law was a poisoned gift. The city, located right on the border with Canada where alcohol was legal, became the hub of bootlegging. The Detroit River, less than a kilometer wide in some places, transformed into a liquid highway for "rum-runners" who transported beer, whiskey, and gin from Windsor, Ontario. Soon, cargoes also crossed through the brand-new tunnel and bridge.
This illegal trade, generating millions of dollars, attracted iconic figures of organized crime such as Detroit's formidable Purple Gang and even Al Capone, who extended his influence to the Motor City.
