The story that haunts this land

Your quest begins at the Skidmore Fountain, a gift from Stephen G. Skidmore in 1888 to provide drinking water for humans and horses. This 3-ton, 16-foot-high fountain, designed by Ira N. Blandford and imported from England, is a key Portland Historic Landmark. Relocated in 1970 to the corner of SW 1st Ave & SW Ankeny St, it marks the entrance to the Old Town Chinatown Historic District, where sailors and criminals once swarmed. It was here, near the water, that 'crimps' laid their traps, a practice that marked the history of Portland and Oregon.

Continue to Pioneer Courthouse Square, a public space opened in 1984 on the site of the former Lewis and Clark Exposition pavilion demolished in 1905. This 1.12-acre square, in downtown Portland's Park Blocks, is a gathering place. It features the 40-foot-high Weather Machine, installed in 1990, which displays weather symbols daily at noon. Although more recent, this site offers a perspective on Portland's urban evolution, contrasting with the older architecture you will explore next.

The Burnside Bridge, opened on December 22, 1910, was Portland's first permanent vehicular bridge across the Willamette River. This 40-foot-wide, 1,662-foot-long bascule truss bridge, named after businessman Dan W. Burnside, was historically raised 72 times daily to allow ships to pass. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993, it connects the city's banks, an essential passage for the business and discrete trafficking that animated Portland's port during the era of the 'crimps'.

In the heart of Old Town Chinatown, you'll discover the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association building at 70 N 4th Ave. Founded in 1878 to serve Portland's Chinese immigrant community, this 1911 structure, with its pagoda-style roof, has been a National Register Historic Place since 1989. It housed the Gee Duck Tong, a key fraternal organization, and served as a community center. The district, designated in 1979, saw its Chinese population peak at 10,000 residents in the 1880s before declining after exclusion acts and urban renewal, leaving cast-iron architecture treasures from 1880-1910.

Your journey will also take you to the Merchant Hotel, built in 1880 at 305 NW 3rd Ave, one of Portland's earliest hotels and a Portland Historic Landmark since 1974. Originally a five-story building, it hosted sailors and merchants during the port's boom. Later becoming Old Town Pizza, its basement is the site of haunting legends tied to an 1890s murder. By deciphering the clues here, you unravel the threads of Portland, Oregon's dark history, and understand how the city, dotted with sites like the White Stag Sign and Chinatown murals, preserves the traces of its past. This route is an immersion into the heritage of a city that remembers its foundations, its lights, and its shadows.

1851
Official founding of Portland, marking the beginning of its port expansion.
1879
Joseph 'Bunco' Kelly, one of the most famous 'crimps', begins his operations in Portland.
1915
The era of shanghaiing begins to decline with stricter legislation and better law enforcement.
