Terezín: From Military Fortress to Propaganda Ghetto
Founded in the late 18th century by Emperor Joseph II, the fortress of Terezín, or Theresienstadt in German, was conceived as a powerful defensive complex to protect the Kingdom of Bohemia. Composed of a Large Fortress and a Small Fortress, it primarily served as a barracks and military prison until World War II. Its star-shaped design, typical of Vauban fortifications, was intended to make it impregnable, but a completely different story unfolded there in the 20th century.
In 1941, the Nazis seized Terezín to transform it into a transit camp and model ghetto, primarily for Jews from Central and Western Europe, as well as elderly or prominent Jewish figures. The Small Fortress became a Gestapo prison of notorious brutality. To conceal the reality of exterminations and suffering, Terezín was 'beautified' in 1944 for a visit by the International Red Cross. Streets were cleaned, fake shops and a café were opened, children were forced to play outside, and even a children's opera, 'Brundibár', was produced for the occasion. This illusion aimed to deceive the world about the fate of the deportees, making Terezín a sinister 'facade city'.
