In May 1885, after the Métis defeat at Batoche, Louis Riel surrenders to Middleton's forces. Transferred to Regina, capital of the North-West Territories, he is tried for high treason before a magistrate and six jurors — all English-speaking. His lawyers plead insanity to save his life, but Riel refuses this defense and claims his political acts.
The trial, which takes place from July 20 to August 1, 1885, is a mockery of justice. Hugh Richardson, the magistrate, refuses to hear defense witnesses and bans the use of French. On August 1, the jury returns a guilty verdict with a recommendation for clemency. Richardson overrides this and sentences Riel to death. On November 16, 1885, at 9:18 AM, Louis Riel is hanged in the courtyard of the Regina Mounted Police.
