Imatra — Mannerheim's Forgotten Message

🎭Your Mission

You are a confidential military archivist, personally summoned by Marshal Gustaf Mannerheim in wartime Helsinki, 1940.

Your mission: decipher a vital message for the defense of Helsinki and Uus

Delve into World War II-era Helsinki, a civilian battlefield where Marshal Mannerheim forged Finnish resistance against the East.

« For our Fatherland »
Marshal Gustaf Mannerheim, Inscription on the Equestrian Statue of Mannerheim, Helsinki, 1960

The story that haunts this land

Your quest for Mannerheim's Forgotten Message begins in Senaatintori, Helsinki's Senate Square. Designed by architect Carl Ludvig Engel between 1818 and 1822, this square is surrounded by neoclassical buildings. Helsinki Cathedral (Tuomiokirkko), with its white dome dominating the urban skyline from the Baltic, was completed in 1852 and stands 50.5 meters high. The Government Palace (1822) and the University of Helsinki (1832) complete this architectural ensemble, a testament to Uusimaa's political upheavals. Here, you'll search for the first traces of secret communications, as the square served as a rallying point for the population during the wars.

Continue your investigation by entering Helsingin tuomiokirkko, Helsinki Cathedral. Built from 1830 to 1852 by Carl Ludvig Engel, its interior houses 13 white marble statues of Protestant reformers, including Martin Luther and Mikael Agricola. With a seating capacity of approximately 1300, it was a central place of solace for Finnish soldiers' families during the Continuation War (1941-1944). It is here, among the silent reformers, that you will decipher symbols hidden within the religious iconography, direct links to codes used by Finnish intelligence services. Helsinki's historical motto, "Sub rosa crescit," resonates with these secrets.

The next stop leads you to Sederholmin talo, the Sederholm House, Helsinki's oldest building, constructed in 1757 in Swedish Rococo style. Former home to the Helsinki City Museum since 1911, this residence was originally owned by Johan Sederholm, a wealthy Swedish merchant of the 18th century. It stands as a testament to the era when Helsinki was under Swedish rule until 1809, before becoming the capital of the Grand Duchy of Finland. Although its style contrasts with the surrounding neoclassicism, its walls witnessed numerous commercial and political exchanges that shaped the city, serving as a conduit for valuable information. Here, you will collect clues about the Marshal's smuggling networks.

Your route then guides you to Havis Amandan patsas, the Mermaid Statue, a fountain-sculpture created in 1906 by Ville Vallgren. This gilded bronze work, 3 meters high, depicts the mythological mermaid Havis Amanda. A symbol of Finnish femininity and freedom, it was a target of political vandalism during the wars (1939-1944). Inscriptions engraved in Swedish and Finnish around the base conceal part of the message. Esplanadin puisto, a linear park created in 1812 and 550 meters long, connects Senaatintori to the harbor and was a place for aristocratic Swedish strolls before becoming a Finnish public space after 1917. It is by wandering under the linden trees planted in 1820 that you will piece together the movements of the Marshal's agents.

The Designmuseo, founded in 1873 as a museum of applied art, renovated in 1989, houses collections of 20th-century Finnish design, including Marimekko ceramics and Alvar Aalto furniture. Located at Korkeavuorenkatu 23, it reflects post-independence Finnish cultural identity. Kasarmitori, Barracks Square, adjacent to the Presidential Palace (Presidentinlinna, 1818), was a former Swedish military site converted into a public space after 1917. The red brick wall of the original 1820 military building, still visible, served as a theater for civilian operations and air-raid shelters during the Continuation War. Finally, Mannerheimin ratsastajapatsas, the Equestrian Statue of Marshal Mannerheim (1960, Aimo Tukiainen), in front of the Mannerheim Museum, is the ultimate stop. Standing 5.5 meters high, it depicts the commander-in-chief of Finnish forces, Gustaf Mannerheim (1867-1951). It is here, before the inscription "Isänmaamme puolesta," that you will assemble the final pieces of the puzzle, understanding the scale of sacrifice and strategy that marked the history of Helsinki, a UNESCO 1985 city, and the neoclassical architectural heritage of Uusimaa.

1940

1941
