Magadan — Mask of Sorrow Conspiracy

In the heart of the Russian Far East, the Kolyma region was the scene of one of the darkest chapters in Soviet history. From the 1930s, with the discovery of immense gold deposits, the Stalinist regime established a vast network of forced labor camps, the Gulags. Millions of "political prisoners" and common criminals were sent to this white hell, where extreme climatic conditions and exhausting labor decimated the populations. Magadan, founded in 1939, became the main port of entry and transit for these prisoners, symbolizing for many the point of no return to lost freedom.

The legacy of Kolyma is heavy, and the silence that long surrounded these atrocities has marked Russian society. After the fall of the Soviet Union, the need to commemorate the victims and break the taboo became evident. It was in this context that sculptor Ernst Neizvestny, himself the child of repressed parents, designed the "Mask of Sorrow" (Маска Скорби), inaugurated in 1996 on a hill overlooking Magadan. This massive monument, representing a stylized face from which tears in the form of prisoner heads emerge, is a powerful tribute to the millions of unknowns who perished in oblivion, a silent cry against barbarism.
