In 1944, the Maquis fighters of the Vosges fought in these forests to liberate France. A forgotten druidic mine, hidden beneath the rocks, served as a weapons cache and liaison point. Between war memory and Celtic mystery, this story has never been fully told.
The forests of the southern Vosges are dense, deep, and studded with granite rocks in strange shapes. For centuries, locals saw druidic stones in them — menhirs, dolmens, cupmarked rocks. In 1944, the Maquis fighters hiding in these woods discovered an ancient mine beneath one of these rocks. It became their secret base, connecting the Resistance to a past no one had forgotten.

« "The forest never betrays those who respect it." »— — Words of a Maquis fighter, Vosges, 1944
From 1943, the forests of the southern Vosges became a bastion of the Resistance. Hundreds of young men, refusing the Compulsory Work Service (STO) imposed by Vichy, hid in the woods and formed Maquis groups. They received weapons parachuted by the Allies and harassed German troops.
The geography of the Vosges — deep forests, narrow valleys, granite rocks pierced with galleries — offered the Maquis fighters ideal terrain. Beneath certain rocks that local tradition calls "druidic stones," ancient iron and copper mines dating from the Celtic era served as weapons caches and command posts.
In September 1944, the fighting for the liberation of Haute-Saône was fierce. The Planche des Belles Filles, a legendary pass between the valleys, was the scene of violent clashes. The local Maquis paid a heavy price. Today, the forests have covered the traces of this war, but the stones remember.
