Founded in 495 by Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei dynasty for the teaching of Buddhism, Shaolin Temple became a center of spiritual development. It was around 527 that Bodhidharma, an Indian Buddhist monk, is said to have introduced the Chan (Zen) branch of Buddhism. He is credited with teaching physical exercises to the monks to improve their endurance and meditative discipline, considered the precursors of Shaolin martial arts.
These practices, combining meditation and bodily movements, gradually evolved into self-defense techniques. Over the centuries, Shaolin monks refined and codified these techniques. In 620, their armed intervention to support Li Shimin (later Emperor Taizong) against a rival marked a turning point, legitimizing their role as warrior monks and cementing their reputation in Chinese history.
