Fes Medina — The Clandestine Manifesto

🎭Your Mission

You are Allal Al-Fassi, co-author of the Moroccan Independence Manifesto, on a secret mission in Fez in January 1944.

Your mission: circulate the revolutionary document

Follow the secret traces of the 1944 Independence Manifesto, distributed clandestinely through the thousand-year-old alleys of Fez medina.

The story that haunts this land

Fez welcomes you through its most watched gate: Bab Bou Jeloud, built in 1913 by French Protectorate authorities. Standing 10 meters high and decorated with blue and green zellige, this monumental entrance controls all movements into the medina. Yet here, according to local accounts, the first copies of the Independence Manifesto were distributed in January 1944. The bilingual Arabic-French inscriptions on the facade bear witness to this colonial period (1912-1956) when every gesture was monitored. Your mission begins at this strategic crossroads where resistance and surveillance have coexisted for over a century.

Medersa Bou Inania opens its doors to you as it welcomed nationalists in the 1940s. Founded in 1350 by Marinid Sultan Abu Inan Faris, this Quranic school with its 250 m² central courtyard served as an intellectual refuge for colonial regime opponents. Its 14th-century stucco and zellige, partially restored in the 20th century, witnessed the circulation of independence ideas among students and teachers. The Quranic inscriptions adorning the walls take on special resonance knowing that traditional religious education was seen as an act of cultural resistance against the forced westernization of the French Protectorate.

Al-Qarawiyyin University, founded in 859 by Fatima Al-Fihri, hides over 4,000 historical manuscripts in its library, some dating from the 11th century. Recognized by UNESCO in 1985 as world heritage, this millennial institution embodied intellectual resistance during the Protectorate. Its lecture halls and mosque were discreet gathering places where Moroccan nationalists prepared the arguments for the 1944 Manifesto. Mohammed V himself, future symbolic signatory of the document, drew from here the religious legitimacy needed to challenge French colonial authority.

Borj Nord has dominated the medina since 1550, when Saadian Sultan Ahmed Al-Mansour erected it 40 meters high. Transformed into an armaments museum in 1963, this fort with bastions and cannons served as an observation post for French colonial authorities to monitor movements in the medina between 1912 and 1956. From its ramparts, Protectorate agents tried to spot clandestine meetings and Independence Manifesto distribution circuits. Historical irony: this symbol of military control became the stone witness to Morocco's struggle for freedom.

Your journey ends at Bab Ftouh, the "Gate of Opening" dating from the Marinid period, restored in the 20th century. This secondary entrance, less watched than Bab Bou Jeloud, was used by resistance fighters for their clandestine movements toward the northern quarters. Its pointed arch typical of Moroccan defensive architecture saw the last Manifesto carriers pass before colonial repression. In 165 minutes through the alleys of Fez-Meknes, you've retraced the secret network that led to Morocco's independence in 1956, twelve years after this revolutionary document's distribution.
