Alpsee stretches across 15 hectares at Hohenschwangau's foot, a glacial lake with a maximum depth of 4 meters fed by alpine springs. Here Prince Louis came to swim in summer before 1864, already contemplating the 12th-century Schwanstein castle ruins that his father Maximilian II was transforming into a royal residence. The reflection of towers in these crystalline waters would later inspire his own fairy-tale castles.
Hohenschwangau castle rises 90 meters above the valley, built between 1833 and 1837 by King Maximilian II of Bavaria on medieval Schwanstein foundations. In its 90 rooms, future Ludwig II grew up until 1864 surrounded by 64 wall frescoes illustrating 13th and 14th-century Germanic epics, created by Moritz von Schwind and Hermann Kaulbach. These legends of knights and swans would nourish his Wagnerian imagination.
Neuschwanstein emerges from rock like a challenge to architectural laws, built from 1869 to 1886 under Ludwig II of Bavaria as tribute to Richard Wagner's operas. Only 14 of 200 planned rooms were completed at the king's death in 1886, but the 346 steps to climb during visits already reveal the project's enormity. The 65-meter Pöllat tower integrated into the structure dominates the gorge of the same name, natural theater of this unfinished dream.
Marienbrücke bridge, built in 1866 at 90 meters above Pöllat gorge, offers the most striking view of Neuschwanstein. About 50 meters long and limited to 30 people simultaneously for safety reasons, it was named in honor of Queen Marie of Bavaria, Ludwig II's mother. The Pöllatschlucht itself, a 90-meter deep gorge carved by the river, inspires the romantic landscape design Ludwig II desired around his castles.
Your route leads from Saint Coloman church, built around 1680 in late baroque style on an 11th-century Romanesque site, to the Museum der bayerischen Könige opened in 2011 in the former Fürstenhof hotel. This permanent Ludwig II exhibition gathers 500 personal objects across 1,200 m², including his study desk from Linderhof. You leave with the certainty that the mad king was above all a visionary: the one who transformed Bavaria into a life-sized opera set.
8 stages through the city
The gameplay: AR, camera, hidden clues
At each stop, open your phone camera: an augmented reality character appears on the façade and speaks your language. Hunt the clue — it materializes as golden letters on the real wall or floats in front of you. When you find it, the phone vibrates, an AR chest opens and reveals your answer fragment. 8 stops, 8 clues to find with the camera, 1 final code.
The stops on your route are a surprise. You'll discover them one by one, guided by your phone, starting from the meeting point.
