The story that haunts this land
Alpsee stretches across 15 hectares at Hohenschwangau's foot, a glacial lake with a maximum depth of 4 meters fed by alpine springs. Here Prince Louis came to swim in summer before 1864, already contemplating the 12th-century Schwanstein castle ruins that his father Maximilian II was transforming into a royal residence. The reflection of towers in these crystalline waters would later inspire his own fairy-tale castles.
Hohenschwangau castle rises 90 meters above the valley, built between 1833 and 1837 by King Maximilian II of Bavaria on medieval Schwanstein foundations. In its 90 rooms, future Ludwig II grew up until 1864 surrounded by 64 wall frescoes illustrating 13th and 14th-century Germanic epics, created by Moritz von Schwind and Hermann Kaulbach. These legends of knights and swans would nourish his Wagnerian imagination.
Neuschwanstein emerges from rock like a challenge to architectural laws, built from 1869 to 1886 under Ludwig II of Bavaria as tribute to Richard Wagner's operas.
