Mir Castle, a jewel of Gothic and then Renaissance architecture, was owned by the Radziwill family from 1568 to 1813. This dynasty of magnates, among the richest and most influential in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, transformed the fortress into an opulent residence, a symbol of their power and refinement. Mikołaj Krzysztof Radziwiłł 'Sierotka' (the Orphan) in particular left his indelible mark, making Mir a major cultural and political center, accumulating colossal wealth and invaluable artistic heritage.
