Eshowe — Hamilton-Browne's Final Report

🎭Your Mission

You are a military intelligence operative, discreetly dispatched to Eshowe in 1880, tasked with investigating persistent rumors from the Anglo-Zulu War.

Colonel Evelyn Wood Hamilton-Browne,

1879 — The report that should never have seen the light of day

« The men perished not through Zulu bravery, but through the incompetence of our generals. This truth must never reach Whitehall. »
Commandant George Hamilton-Browne, 1879

Fort Nongqayi and the Anglo-Zulu War

Fort Nongqayi was built in 1883 as a Zululand police post, four years after the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. Commanded by colonial officer Sir Melmoth Osborn, this fort was to control the Eshowe region after the defeat of King Cetshwayo. The name 'Nongqayi' means 'the one who watches' in Zulu — a symbol of British occupation over the former kingdom.

The Battle of Isandlwana on January 22, 1879, remains one of the British army's most stinging defeats in Africa. Lord Chelmsford divided his forces, leaving 1,300 men exposed to Cetshwayo's 20,000 warriors. George Hamilton-Browne, commander of the 3rd Regiment Natal Native Contingent, survived the massacre and testified to the fatal tactical errors. His official report was censored by the general staff, but fragments of his true conclusions circulated secretly among Natal officers.

You get 3 levels of hints per puzzle (increasing penalty). If truly stuck, you can skip the step (45-min penalty but you keep going).

Q05What's the age range?

From 12 without an adult, from 6 with an adult reading puzzles. Works for families, couples, friend groups, companies.
