Diego Colón: The Viceroy of Nascent America
« The city of Santo Domingo is the first and oldest of all cities founded by the Spanish in the New World. »— Bartolomé de las Casas, History of the Indies
After Christopher Columbus's death in 1506, his son Diego embarked on a long legal battle to have his rights and titles over the lands discovered by his father recognized. Finally appointed Governor of the Indies by Ferdinand II of Aragon, he arrived in Hispaniola in 1509 with his wife, María de Toledo, the King's niece. They settled in Santo Domingo, transforming the modest colony into a capital worthy of the crown, with the construction of the Alcázar de Colón, the first fortified palace of the New World.
Diego Colón's viceroyalty was marked by attempts to establish a stable administration, but also by intense tensions with settlers and royal authorities. Accused of abuse of power and mismanagement, he spent much of his time defending himself before the court, traveling back and forth between Hispaniola and Spain. The decree confirming the extent of his prerogatives, signed by the king, was the subject of much speculation and disappearance, fueling rumors of royal control over the destiny of the Americas.
