The Dawn of a Dynasty and its Shadows
Zhu Yuanzhang, a humble peasant, rose to overthrow the Mongol Yuan Dynasty and founded the Ming Dynasty in 1368, becoming Emperor Hongwu. He established his capital in Nanjing, transforming the city into a magnificent imperial center, erecting palaces, temples, and immense city walls. His reign was marked by agrarian reforms, centralization of power, and bloody purges, but he laid the foundations for one of the most stable and prosperous periods in Chinese history.
The death of his eldest son and designated heir, Prince Zhu Biao, in 1392, created a power vacuum. Hongwu then appointed his grandson, Zhu Yunwen, as successor. However, this decision was contested by the powerful imperial princes, notably Zhu Di, Hongwu's fourth son. Upon the emperor's death in 1398, Zhu Yunwen ascended the throne, but rivalry quickly erupted into civil war. Myths and legends surround the succession, including the idea that Hongwu left a cryptic message in the design of his mausoleum, the Xiaoling, to clarify the true legitimacy of power.
