Your quest begins at the Drommedaris, this 20-meter high fortified tower built in 1649, which served as a prison until 1825. This Rijksmonument, with a 10-meter diameter at its base, was the starting point for many VOC expeditions, transporting spices like pepper and cloves to the Indies. Enkhuizen, a major port for the Dutch East India Company founded in 1602, was then a commercial hub. The conspiracy unfolds here, and you must find the first clues hidden in its stones to understand how the cargo disappears.
Continue to the Oude Haven, the historic old port dating from the 17th century, the nerve center of Enkhuizen's maritime trade. In the 17th century, over 200 VOC merchant ships operated from this 500-meter long port, lined with gabled buildings typical of the Dutch Golden Age. From here, many ships departed for Batavia (now Jakarta), carrying spice cargoes valued at millions of guilders. Your investigations here will lead you to question the shadows of captains and merchants to discover who among them is involved in the betrayal.
The next step takes you to the Westerkerk, a Reformed church built between 1460 and 1520, whose 70-meter tower, completed in 1635, bears a 5-ton bell from 1661, visible from the port. This place of worship was frequented by VOC sailors before their long voyages, and its baptismal records between 1600 and 1700 contain names of captains who could be linked to the plot. Jan van Covelens' 1680 organ inside still echoes with the prayers and secrets of Enkhuizen's maritime families. You will find coded messages left by an informant here.
The route then leads you to the VOC Pakhuis, the VOC warehouses built from 1599, covering approximately 2,000 m² along the port, with their characteristic 17th-century facades. These buildings, restored in 1980, stored spices, silk, and porcelain imported from Asia. Enkhuizen was one of the six founding ports of the VOC in 1602, notably exporting pepper to Amsterdam. This is where goods were handled, and within these walls, you must search for evidence of embezzlement, perhaps even VOC artifacts exhibited at the adjacent Zuiderzeemuseum.
Your investigation concludes after passing through De Waag, the 1633 public weighing house where VOC cargoes were taxed, and the Stadhuis, the 1592-1594 town hall, administrative seat of Enkhuizen's prosperity. You finish your journey at the Sluis, the 1675 lock, essential for ships returning laden with spices. Every step in this Noord-Holland city has brought you closer to the truth, revealing the complex workings of trade and the power struggles of that era. You have thus foiled the plot, protecting the VOC heritage and the future of Enkhuizen.
