Your investigation begins on the Oude Delft, in the shadow of the Oostpoort, this city gate dating from 1400, the only survivor of Delft's seven medieval gates. It served as a crucial guard post during the Revolt against the Spanish from 1572 to 1648, and its 15-meter-high tower, with its original drawbridge, reminds you of the tensions of the era. From there, you approach the Oude Kerk, built in 1240, whose 13.4-meter leaning tower testifies to unstable ground. This place of worship was used from 1572 during the Dutch Revolt, housing the tomb of Pierre de La Court, a merchant linked to the movement.
Continue your visit to Delft towards the Markt, the central square since the 13th century, where the weekly market has been held since 1285. This 5,000 m² square, surrounded by 17th-century facades, was a place of significant public executions, notably that of Balthasar Gérard in 1584. In the center, the 1695 fountain, funded by the Dutch East India Company, casts an ironic light on past conflicts. It is here, in front of the Stadhuis van Delft, that the first tensions of the plot are revealed, with whispers about William the Silent's intentions.
The Stadhuis van Delft, built in 1620 by Hendrick de Keyser in Dutch Baroque style, is your next stop. Its facade, adorned with 25 statues of Counts of Holland, including William the Silent, dominates the square. The 96-meter tower, equipped with a carillon since 1661, rang the city's bells when William was assassinated in 1584, when the building was the seat of municipal government. It is in its archives that you hope to find clues about the conspirators, in connection with the candidate UNESCO heritage of Rotterdam-Zuid-Holland.
Your quest then leads you to the Museum Prinsenhof Delft, a major historical site in the Netherlands. A former St. Agnes convent built from 1395, it was converted into William of Orange's residence in 1572. It is the exact location of the prince's assassination by Balthasar Gérard on July 10, 1584, and you can see the two bullet holes in the wall. After his torture in August 1584, Balthasar Gérard's tomb was displayed there, marking this museum as a crucial 1584 Dutch Revolt site. The 2,500 m² exhibition halls hold the secrets of the plot.
As you head towards the Nieuwe Kerk, built between 1383 and 1510, you understand the magnitude of the tragedy. Its 108.7-meter tower, the tallest in the Netherlands, has housed the tomb of William of Orange and the Orange-Nassau royal family since 1584. The 16th-century stained-glass windows commemorate the Dutch Revolt, and royal funeral services are still held there. This thematic circuit in Delft, this interactive city tour, will not only have introduced you to the Zuid-Holland heritage, but also to the deep ramifications of Delft's and the Netherlands' history, a true historical monument that shaped the nation.
