The Roots of Shame
Canton (today Guangzhou) was for centuries China's main port of entry, the nerve center of international trade. However, in the 19th century, British merchants, seeking to balance their trade deficit due to the import of tea and silk, began to massively import opium from British India. This rapidly addictive drug ravaged Chinese society, draining money from the country and weakening the population.
Faced with this national crisis, Emperor Daoguang appointed Lin Zexu imperial commissioner in Canton. His relentless campaign against opium, culminating in the destruction of over 20,000 chests of opium in Humen in 1839, was the spark that ignited the First Opium War. China's defeat and the resulting Treaty of Nanking marked the beginning of the "century of humiliation" and unequal treaties, forcibly opening China to foreign influence.
