Maori oral tradition describes several great waka (canoes) that brought Polynesian ancestors to New Zealand. Among them, the Tākitimu waka is particularly revered in the south, being associated with the Ngāi Tahu iwi, the indigenous people of Murihiku. These voyages were feats of navigation, guided by stars and knowledge of currents. Upon arrival, settlers had to adapt to a new environment, learning to live off the land and sea, and interact with local fauna, including the Moa.
The Moa, already present for millions of years, became a vital resource. Its meat, bones for tools, and eggs for sustenance marked a period of intense hunting. Despite Maori respect for nature (kaitiakitanga), hunting pressure combined with other environmental factors led to the rapid extinction of the Moa.
