Kutná Hora's hidden fortune and the mystery of the bones
« « In truth, the land of Bohemia holds more treasures than the human mind can conceive, for those who know how to read the signs. » »— Excerpt from an anonymous Cistercian manuscript, early 15th century.
Kutná Hora emerged in the 13th century as one of Europe's most important mining centers, thanks to its rich silver deposits. The city became so prosperous that it housed the Royal Mint and was the economic engine of the Kingdom of Bohemia. In 1300, King Wenceslaus II promulgated the 'Ius regale montanorum', a revolutionary mining code that regulated silver extraction and processing, attracting miners and experts from across the continent and making Kutná Hora a city of unparalleled wealth and influence.
However, Kutná Hora's fortune was also its weakness. The Hussite Wars (1419-1434) ended this golden age, with the city being besieged and partially destroyed. The Cistercian monastery in Sedlec, founded in 1142, also suffered greatly. Ironically, it was this period of decline and the ravages of epidemics that left behind the thousands of skeletons which, centuries later, would be artistically arranged in the famous Sedlec Ossuary by František Rint in 1870, transforming a resting place into a macabre work of art and a meditation on mortality.
