Papantla, between alliance and resistance
In 1519-1520, the Totonacs of the Papantla region were among the first indigenous peoples to ally with Hernán Cortés. Oppressed by the Aztec Empire which imposed heavy tribute on them, they saw the Spanish as potential liberators. This alliance was decisive for the conquest of Mexico — the Totonacs provided guides, porters, and warriors to the conquistadors.
However, this collaboration was not unanimous. Factions of Totonac warriors, led by chiefs like Tlacaelel, quickly understood that the Spanish alliance did not mean independence but a new yoke. Revolts broke out as early as 1523, severely repressed. Nevertheless, Papantla preserved its Totonac culture, notably through the dance of the voladores, a symbol of spiritual resistance against the conquerors.
