Your journey begins at the Batoche Interpretive Centre, the gateway to this National Historic Site of Canada. From there, you will reach the Saint-Antoine-de-Padoue Church, a central building for the Métis community and a key point of resistance in May 1885. Damaged during the battle, this restored church is one of the buildings testifying to the intensity of the fighting. Bullet holes on the nearby rectory, also restored, recall the violence of the clashes between fewer than 300 Métis and First Nations defenders and Major-General Middleton's 800 Canadian Militia troops.
Continuing your exploration of Batoche, you head towards the banks of the South Saskatchewan River. It was here, along the 1.5 km of trails, that Métis forces fired on Middleton's troops aboard the Northcote paddle wheeler in 1885. This location, 88 km northeast of Saskatoon, offers a direct perspective on the battlefield and the ingenuity of the defenders. The Batoche Butte, overlooking the river, was a strategic observation post for Louis Riel's Provisional Government, established as Saskatchewan's headquarters in 1885.
The route then leads you to the famous Métis Rifle Pits, a crucial element of Batoche's defense. These series of firing pits, dug along the bush edge, were the last stronghold of Métis and First Nations combatants from May 9 to 12, 1885. Still partially preserved, these trenches are a poignant testimony to the North-West Resistance 1885. They illustrate the organization and determination of the defenders against a numerically superior force, marking a decisive chapter in Saskatchewan's history.
On your way to the Batoche General Store, you cross Gabriel Dumont's Escape Trail, named after the Métis military leader. This path retraces Dumont's steps after the defeat, highlighting bravery and resilience in the face of adversity. The general store, also restored within the Métis village designated a National Historic Site, was a nerve center of community life before and during the Resistance. It offers an insight into the daily life of the Métis and the importance of this village on the banks of the South Saskatchewan River.
Your quest concludes near the General Middleton Monument and Louis Riel's Cross, as well as the Graves at Batoche, where Gabriel Dumont and other figures from the 1885 conflict rest. These memorial sites recall the sacrifice for Métis land and identity. By following this thematic circuit in Batoche, you will not only have discovered monuments, but you will have gained a tangible understanding of the history of the North-West Resistance 1885, a foundational event in Saskatchewan's heritage, offering a deep understanding of the issues of the time.
