The city of Ys — Brittany's Atlantis at the bottom of the bay
The legend of the city of Ys is the founding myth of Brittany. King Gradlon, sovereign of Cornouaille, built for his daughter Dahut a magnificent city in the bay of Douarnenez, protected from the ocean by a colossal dike. Only a golden key, which the king wore around his neck, could open the floodgates.
Dahut, a rebellious and pagan princess, led a life of debauchery in her palace. One night, a mysterious stranger — the Devil in disguise — seduced her and asked for the key as a pledge of love. Dahut stole it from her sleeping father and opened the gates. The sea rushed into the city. Gradlon, awakened by Saint Guénolé, fled on horseback but had to abandon Dahut to the waves to save himself.
The Breton proverb "Pa vo beuzet Paris, ec'h adsavo Ker-Is" means "When Paris drowns, Ys shall rise again." Folk etymology derives "Paris" from "Par-Is" — "equal to Ys." The legend claims that on misty nights, you can hear the bells of Ys ringing beneath the waves of Douarnenez bay.
