In the 1940s and 1950s, Havana was the preferred playground for American mafias. Figures like Meyer Lansky, Lucky Luciano, and Santo Trafficante Jr. established vast empires of casinos, hotels, and nightclubs there, benefiting from the tolerance of dictator Fulgencio Batista.
