Guantánamo Bay — Shadow Conspiracy

Guantánamo was born in 1796 as a Spanish outpost against French incursions from Haiti. Parque José Martí, inaugurated in the early 20th century, occupies the heart of this colonial city where administrative buildings from the late 19th century converge. The Palacio de Salcines, erected in 1916 by modernist architect Pablo Salcines, illustrates post-colonial architectural emancipation. This eclectic 1,200 m² residence with Art Nouveau towers served as municipal headquarters until 1959, symbolizing the transition between Spanish administration and the Cuban Republic. Classified as National Monument in 2001, it housed the first free municipal assemblies where José Martí's political legacy was debated, after his death in combat at Dos Ríos in 1895.

Casa del Changüí, installed in a 19th-century colonial house, has celebrated since 2005 the Afro-Cuban musical genre born in Guantánamo. Recognized as intangible heritage by UNESCO in 2018, changüí fuses Bantu rhythms with Spanish guitar and French double bass. This music accompanied clandestine revolutionary meetings, Mariana Grajales herself listened to it in her Santiago home before encouraging her Maceo sons toward insurrection. Plaza de la Revolución, inaugurated in 1976, honors this mother of heroes with a 5-meter statue.
