Your journey begins at the Römertor, the Roman North Gate, an imposing remnant of the wall built around 50 AD under Claudius. Standing 12.5 m high and 13.6 m wide, this gate was the Porta Praetoria of the legionary camp of Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium, named in honor of Agrippina the Younger, who founded the colony that same year for her veterans. Designated a historic Denkmal since 1964, this structure is a direct testament to Roman engineering and Agrippina's vision, who, after the death of her husband Germanicus, shaped the future of this North Rhine-Westphalia region.
Nearby, beneath the Römisch-Germanisches Museum, lies the Roman Praetorium, the palace of the Roman governor from the 1st to 4th centuries AD. Discovered in 1929, this 100x100 m palace served as the administrative center of the capital of Germania Inferior. Agrippina the Younger, born in Ara Ubiorum (Cologne's predecessor) in 15 AD, undoubtedly walked these grounds. The museum, founded in 1821, now houses Germany's largest Roman silver treasure (70 objects, 45 kg, dated 220 AD) and the 7x7 m Dionysus mosaic, exhibited in situ, one of the largest in Northern Germany, offering an immersion into daily Roman life.
Your quest then leads you to the Hohe Straße, the ancient Roman decumanus maximus, paved around 50 AD and 1.2 km long, connecting the Rhine to the north gate. This was the commercial center of Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium, and excavations have revealed 2nd-century shops. Just 200 m from the Römertor, this street was the main axis through the Roman quarters, a place where legions and merchants crossed paths, and where Agrippina's influence was felt through the colony's prosperity. It is here that the vibrancy of the Roman Empire came to life in Cologne.
Further south, the imposing St. Maria im Kapitol, a Romanesque church founded in 690 by Plectrude, wife of Pepin of Herstal, was consecrated in 1065. It is built on the foundations of a 1st-century AD Roman Capitoline temple (dedicated to Jupiter, Juno, Minerva). The third-largest Romanesque church in Cologne, 50 m long with a unique Greek cross-shaped transept, it is located 800 m from the starting point. Although medieval, it embodies the superposition of eras on the same sacred sites, a direct link to ancient Rome that preceded and influenced Carolingian and medieval Cologne, housing a relic of the True Cross since 983.
Finally, your journey concludes with the remnants of the Roman Wall, notably at Zeughausstraße near the Römertor, and the medieval Eigelsteintorburg. The 4th-century Roman encircling wall, 2.5 m thick and 10 m high, protected Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium, reinforced under Constantius Chlorus in 306. The Eigelsteintorburg, a 30 m high watchtower from the medieval wall (1222-1227), is the last vestige of the northwest gate, restored in 1898. These successive fortifications, from the UNESCO World Heritage (near the cathedral) to the historic Denkmal, tell the story of Cologne and North Rhine-Westphalia's perseverance through the ages, a legacy you will have deciphered, revealing Agrippina's hidden power and the constant evolution of this city over 2000 years.
