Kabukichō — Decipher the Yakuza Code

🎭Your Mission

You are a trusted archivist, commissioned by the 4th Tokugawa Shogun Ietsuna in 1658, to decipher ancestral codes linking Tokyo's sacred past to its vibrant

Dive into the vibrant alleys of Shinjuku Kabukicho, Tokyo, where the ink of shadows tells the secrets of a district born from post-war ashes.

The story that haunts this land

Your quest begins at Hanazono-jinja Shrine, a peaceful sanctuary founded in 1654 during the Genroku era by Shogun Tokugawa Ietsuna. This site, dedicated to Inari and Ukanomitama, was rebuilt in 1739 after a fire and occupies an area of 3,000 m² in the heart of Kabukicho. The shrine's archives reveal its historical ties to the merchants of the Omon district, precursors to today's Kabukicho. Each year, the Hanazono Jinja Matsuri attracts over 100,000 visitors, perpetuating a tradition dating back to the founding of the Jinja Shinto Tokyo in 1654, immersing you in the spiritual heritage of Tokyo Kanto.

Continue towards the Tokyu Kabukicho Tower, which opened in January 2023. This 46-story tower, soaring 190 m high, was developed by Tokyu Corporation to revitalize the post-pandemic district, at a cost of 300 billion ¥. On the 4th floor, THE TOKYO MATRIX, an immersive 1,500 m² escape game inspired by Sword Art Online, shows how modern innovation integrates with Shinjuku Kabukicho's entertainment. The 46th floor offers a 360° observation deck over Shinjuku, with a capacity of 200 people, a striking contrast to the centuries-old history of Hanazono-jinja.

Your journey then takes you to Tokyo Mystery Circus, opened in December 2017 in the APM Building in Kabukicho. This complex of Real Escape Games and Stealth Games spans 5 floors and 3,000 m², welcoming over 2.8 million visitors by 2024. Located at 1-27-5 Kabukicho, it offers immersive espionage themes and English puzzles for groups of 1 to 4 people, with prices ranging from 2,700 to 4,500 ¥. This site represents the vitality of outdoor escape games and scavenger hunts in Tokyo, right in the heart of Shinjuku.

Explore Kabukicho Ichibangai, also known as Golden Street, a narrow 400 m long pedestrian alley developed in 1975. Known as the 'host club street' with over 100 establishments in 2023, its origins trace back to the arrival of US soldiers post-1945 and an influx of migrant workers in the 1960s. Daily police patrols by the Shinjuku PD since 2010 have reduced yakuza crime, allowing you to safely discover this iconic heritage site of Tokyo Kanto, a testament to the district's evolution.

Finally, your investigation concludes by observing the Godzilla Head on the Hotel Gracery Shinjuku, a 12 m statue installed in November 2015. Inspired by the 1954 Godzilla film, this 360° visible icon cost 100 million ¥ and is illuminated 24/7. This free tourist symbol, 500 m from the Hanazono starting point, attracts 1 million photos annually. By completing this thematic tour in Tokyo, you will have not only deciphered the codes of Kabukicho's past and present but also experienced a unique interactive visit, blending history, culture, and modern entertainment in the bustling setting of Shinjuku.

1945
End of World War II, emergence of black markets and consolidation of early Yakuza organizations.
1958
Formation of the Inagawa-kai, one of the largest Yakuza syndicates, marking an era of consolidation and expansion.
1992
Enactment of the Anti-Boryokudan Law (Act on Countermeasures Against Criminal Organizations), forcing Yakuza to adapt and operate more discreetly.

No, never. You get a link, you click, it plays in your browser. That's the point of a PWA: same as an app, without the hassle.

Q02Does it work offline?

GPS yes (handled by your phone). Maps yes (tiles cached). AI and hints need an intermittent 4G connection.

1 h 30 to 2 h 30 depending on your pace. The timer runs but only for the leaderboard — you play at your own tempo.

Q04What happens if I'm stuck?

You get 3 levels of hints per puzzle (increasing penalty). If truly stuck, you can skip the step (45-min penalty but you keep going).

Q05What's the age range?

From 12 without an adult, from 6 with an adult reading puzzles. Works for families, couples, friend groups, companies.

Q06What if my city isn't in the catalogue?

Pre-register or contact us — we'll email you as soon as your city is live.

Q07What is augmented reality exactly?

Point your phone at the façade: a historical character appears full-screen and speaks to you in your language. At the puzzle climax, golden letters magically write themselves on the real wall — that's your answer. After each puzzle solved, a treasure chest floats in front of you. Seeing is believing.
