July 1755
You are a local scribe, secretly tasked by the Acadian community in July 1755 to preserve the true accounts of their coming displacement.
Grand-Pré, the heart of Acadian life
The hidden testament of Charles des Champs de Boishébert
« By these presents, His Majesty has ordered that all French inhabitants be deported from this province. »— Lieutenant-Colonel John Winslow, September 5, 1755
In 1755, the Seven Years' War pits France against England on all continents. In Acadia, a French colony conquered by the British in 1710, live 13,000 descendants of French settlers who refused to take an unconditional oath of allegiance to the British Crown. Lieutenant-Governor Charles Lawrence and his advisors decide on the 'Acadian Final Solution': mass deportation and confiscation of all their lands.
On September 5, 1755, in Grand-Pré, agricultural heart of Acadia, begins the Great Deportation. Over ten years, 11,500 Acadians would be deported to American colonies, England, France or Louisiana. Families separated, children torn from parents, entire villages razed. This human tragedy, long hidden, is today recognized by UNESCO as world heritage of humanity — universal memory of exile and cultural resistance.
