Bayamo, the city that immolated itself for freedom
« To combat, run, Bayamese! For the Homeland watches you proudly. »— Pedro 'Perucho' Figueredo, National Anthem of Cuba (La Bayamesa)
On October 10, 1868, Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, landowner and lawyer, proclaimed the Grito de Yara, freeing his slaves and marking the beginning of the Ten Years' War for Cuba's independence. Eight days later, the Mambises (insurgent) forces captured the city of Bayamo. It was in this climate of patriotic fervor that Pedro 'Perucho' Figueredo, a young lawyer and musician, composed the notes of 'La Bayamesa'. The melody, quickly popular, was sung for the first time with its complete lyrics on October 20, 1868, the day Bayamo was captured, in the Plaza de Armas (now Parque Céspedes).
Less than three months later, the Spanish reconquest was imminent. Faced with the advance of colonial troops and refusing to surrender, the people of Bayamo made a radical and unprecedented decision: to set their city on fire with their own hands. From January 12 to 18, 1869, Bayamo burned, turning its homes and possessions to ashes rather than leaving them to the invaders. This act of ultimate sacrifice, a 'collective suicide' for freedom, would forever forge the indomitable spirit of the Cuban nation and make 'La Bayamesa' the musical embodiment of its quest for independence, officially becoming the national anthem in 1899.
