November 10, 1898 — the day America tipped over
« We have 600 Winchester-armed men and we intend to govern this town »— Alfred Moore Waddell, November 10, 1898
In 1898, Wilmington had 20,000 residents, 56% African American. The city thrived under a Fusionist government combining Black Republicans and white Populists. Black leaders held key positions: Alex Manly ran the Daily Record, the South's only Black daily newspaper, John Dancy was customs collector at the port, and dozens of Black entrepreneurs owned restaurants, barbershops, and transportation companies.
The 1898 electoral campaign unleashed unprecedented racist propaganda. White Democrats, led by Furnifold Simmons and Charles Aycock, orchestrated a campaign of terror: the Red Shirts patrolled armed, intimidating Black voters. On November 10, two days after the election, 2,000 armed men converged on the Daily Record. They burned the newspaper, drove out the legal government, and installed Alfred Waddell as mayor. Over 2,000 African Americans fled the city, losing homes and businesses. The coup was complete.
