From Ancient Trade Hub to Roman Granary

Bahariya Oasis, known in ancient times as the 'Northern Oasis', has been inhabited for thousands of years, with archaeological findings from the Neolithic period. Its location along trade routes connecting Egypt with Libya and other parts of the Sahara made it a hub for the exchange of goods and ideas.

During the Middle Kingdom (around 2000-1800 BCE), Bahariya was under pharaonic control and exported agricultural products, including wine, to the Nile Valley. The oasis developed during the Late Period, particularly the 26th Dynasty (7th-6th centuries BCE). This era saw the construction of religious complexes like the Temple of Ain el-Muftella and tombs in Qārat Qasr Salim, indicating a period of economic activity.

The Greco-Roman period (332 BC–395 AD) was another significant era for Bahariya. The oasis was known for its production of wine, olive oil, dates, and cereals. Alexander the Great is associated with the oasis, with a temple dedicated to him at Al-Qasr, built in the 4th century BCE. The Romans constructed a military fort at Qarat el-Toub and an extensive network of aqueducts, some of which are still in use. The discovery of the Valley of the Golden Mummies in 1996, a necropolis with hundreds of mummies adorned with gold, indicated Bahariya's importance as a settlement during the Greco-Roman era.

Modern Connections and Enduring Traditions

For centuries, Bahariya remained an isolated community. The completion of an asphalt road connecting Bahariya to Cairo in the early 1970s increased the flow of people and ideas, bringing electricity, modern communication, and greater accessibility. Today, the local population, known as the Waḥātī people, are descendants of ancient inhabitants, Bedouin tribes, and migrants from the Nile Valley. They maintain a cultural heritage, with traditional music and crafts. Agriculture, particularly date cultivation, remains central to the local economy, alongside iron ore mining and a growing tourism sector.

• —El-Bawiti Central Square — This is the largest village and the administrative center of the Bahariya Oasis. It provides a view of local life.
• —Temple of Alexander the Great, Al-Qasr — This temple is dedicated to Alexander the Great, built in the 4th century BCE. Its walls once depicted Alexander offering sacrifices to Egyptian gods like Amun and Horus.
• —Qarat Qasr Salim Necropolis — This ridge contains tombs from the 26th Dynasty, discovered in 1938. These tombs, such as the Tomb of Zad-Amun ef-Ankh, were built by local merchants and feature painted decorations.
• —Tomb of Bannentiu, Qarat Qasr Salim — This tomb, part of the Qarat Qasr Salim necropolis, belonged to a priest and prophet. It shows burial practices and social structures of ancient Egypt.
• —Temple of Ain el-Muftella — A complex of four chapels from the 26th Dynasty, this site was a religious center and may have served as the city center of ancient El Qasr (modern Bawiti). Its walls feature hieroglyphic inscriptions and depictions of ancient Egyptian gods, including Amun and Horus, and Pharaoh Ahmose II.
• —Qaret el-Musrab Necropolis — This site is part of the archaeological landscape of Bahariya, showing the extent of burial grounds in the oasis.
• —Golden Mummies Museum, El-Bawiti — This museum houses mummies discovered in the nearby Valley of the Golden Mummies, an archaeological site found in 1996. These Greco-Roman mummies have gilded faces and accompanying artifacts.
• —Hot Spring of Bir Al-Ghaba — One of several natural hot springs in Bahariya, its waters are heated by geothermal activity.

The period from October to April is suitable for visiting Bahariya Oasis. Daytime temperatures range from 18°C to 30°C (64°F to 86°F), which is suitable for exploring archaeological sites and the desert. Nights can be cool in winter (November-February), dropping to 5-12°C (41-54°F), so warm clothing is needed. This period has fewer sandstorms and clear skies. Spring (March-April) offers blooming desert flora and local craft fairs.

Avoid visiting from May to September, as summer temperatures reach 40-45°C (104-113°F) during the day and remain above 25°C (77°F) at night. The heat makes outdoor activities uncomfortable.

Bahariya Oasis is approximately 370-400 kilometers southwest of Cairo. The journey by road takes about 4 to 5 hours. Options include hiring a private taxi or taking a public bus from Cairo's Turgoman Square. Many visitors use organized tours from Cairo, which often include transportation and desert safaris.

Within Bahariya, 4x4 vehicles are used for desert excursions, and taxis for shorter distances within villages like El-Bawiti and Al-Qasr. Walking is possible within villages, but distances between sites can be long. Local guides are recommended for desert safaris. Parking is available in the main villages. Sharing tea with locals is a common custom.
