From Ancient Crossroads to Naxi Stronghold

Lijiang's story begins before its official founding. Permanent settlements of the Naxi people, such as Baisha and Shuhe, appeared in the region as early as the 7th century. The city, historically known as Dayan, began to take shape between the Song (960–1279) and Yuan (1279–1368) dynasties. In 1253, Mongol troops established a military settlement here after conquering the Dali Kingdom. Its location at the junction of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau and the Himalayan foothills made it a hub for diverse cultures and a point on the Ancient Tea Horse Road, where Chinese tea was traded for Tibetan horses. The name Dayan itself, meaning "a place where warehouses are concentrated," shows its historical importance as a trade and logistics center.

The Enduring Legacy of the Mu Clan

For five centuries, until the arrival of the Qing Dynasty in the 18th century, Lijiang was governed by the Naxi chieftains of the Mu clan. Their residence, the Mu Family Residence, served as the political center of the region. This period saw Lijiang develop as a place where Han and Tibetan traditions intertwined with Naxi culture. The city's architectural style, urban planning, and social customs, which blend elements from Han, Bai, and Tibetan cultures with Naxi features, are a direct result of these exchanges over 800 years. Following an earthquake in 1996, which largely spared the traditional structures while destroying many modern buildings, the value of Lijiang's ancient architecture was re-evaluated. This led to restoration efforts that transformed the Old Town into a major destination.

• —The Big Water Wheel (Dayan Old Town North Gate) — This water wheel is a landmark at the entrance to Lijiang Old Town, symbolizing water management in the city's design. It is a starting point for exploring the ancient streets.
• —Sifang Street (Square of Four Winds) — This roughly 500-square-meter open square was the main trading plaza of the Ancient Tea Horse Road. It remains the social and commercial center of Lijiang Old Town. It is surrounded by Naxi wooden buildings housing restaurants, shops, and cafes. In the evenings, Naxi residents gather here for traditional dancing.
• —Mu Family Residence — This complex was the official residence of the Mu family chieftains who ruled Lijiang for nearly five centuries. It displays a blend of Naxi architectural traditions and Han Chinese palace design, with halls, courtyards, and gardens.
• —Black Dragon Pool Park (Heilongtan Park) — This park offers views of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain reflecting in its waters, especially on clear winter days. It is also the source of the spring water that feeds the canal system of Lijiang Old Town.
• —Dongba Culture Museum — Located within Black Dragon Pool Park, this museum provides information on the Dongba script and the cultural heritage of the Naxi people, including their oral literature and folk art.
• —Dayan Market (also known as Zhongyi Market) — This market offers a view into local life, with vendors selling mountain herbs, fresh produce, and local goods. It is a place to experience the daily rhythm of Lijiang away from the main tourist areas.

The best times to visit Lijiang are April to early May or October. During these months, skies are clear, rainfall is low, and daytime temperatures are 19-23°C. April has clear air, blossoming trees, and fewer crowds before the summer peak. October offers dry autumn light and clear mountain views.

The dry season, from November to early March, brings the clearest and sunniest weather, suitable for seeing Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. However, nights can be cold, often dropping below freezing in December and January. Avoid July and August, which combine the heaviest rainfall (around 240 mm each) with the peak domestic tourist season, leading to crowded conditions and muddy trails.

Lijiang Sanyi International Airport (LJG) is about 28 km from the Old Town. An airport shuttle bus costs ¥20 and takes 30-40 minutes to Blue Moon Valley Square, an entrance to the ancient town. Taxis typically cost ¥80-100 and take 25-35 minutes. The Lijiang Railway Station, about 8 km from the Old Town, is connected by public buses (routes 4, 16, 18 for ¥1-2) or a taxi (¥30-40, 15-20 minutes).

Within Lijiang Old Town, the core area is pedestrian-only. Walking is the primary way to get around, so wear comfortable, non-slip shoes for the stone streets. For destinations outside the Old Town, such as Shuhe Ancient Town or Black Dragon Pool, Didi (a ride-hailing app) or local buses (often ¥1-2) are convenient. Parking is available at exterior facilities around the Old Town, as private vehicles are restricted inside. An ¥50 maintenance fee is required for accommodation inside the Old Town.
