The history of Miramichi
Mi'kmaq Presence and French Settlement
Before European settlement, the Miramichi region was inhabited by the Mi'kmaq First Nation. Beaubears Island, at the confluence of the Northwest and Main Southwest branches of the Miramichi River, served as a natural gathering point for the Mi'kmaq people. Following European arrival in the Americas, the Miramichi became part of the French colony of Acadia. Around 1648, Nicolas Denys, Sieur de Fronsac, established Fort Fronsac, a fort and trading post, on the north side of the Miramichi, at the river's forks.

In 1765, William Davidson and John Cort received a large land grant in the Miramichi region, which they promoted to settlers from Scotland and New England. Davidson established a shipbuilding industry in 1773 to facilitate overseas lumber exports, including masts for the British navy. The region benefited from the Napoleonic Wars, as Britain relied on its North American colonies for lumber. However, the Great Miramichi Fire of 1825 devastated much of the area, burning nearly a quarter of New Brunswick's forest and most buildings along the northern side of the river. Only 12 buildings remained in Newcastle. The towns of Newcastle and Chatham, which had developed a long-standing rivalry, were amalgamated with several other communities in 1995 to form the city of Miramichi.
