Early Settlement and Growth

Altun Ha, meaning "Rockstone Water" in Yucatec Maya, is named after the modern village of Rockstone Pond. The earliest evidence of settlement at Altun Ha dates to approximately 900 BC. Two round platforms, Structures C13 and C17, in Zone C, indicate early wealth and religious activity.

Significant growth began around 100 BC with the construction of monumental structures. The city flourished during the Classic Period, from 400 AD to 900 AD, reaching a population of 8,000 to 10,000 people. Altun Ha served as a central trading hub. Located about 6 miles west of the Caribbean Sea, it connected coastal trade routes around the Yucatan Peninsula to interior Maya centers. This position allowed its residents to accumulate wealth through the trade of jade, obsidian, and other goods.

Decline and Archaeological Discovery

Construction at Altun Ha continued until around 900 AD, though the quality of new buildings declined about 150 years prior. Like many Classic Maya sites, Altun Ha experienced societal disruption and a slow decline in the early 10th century AD. The site was abandoned by the Postclassic Period. Stones from the ancient structures were reused for residential construction in the modern village of Rockstone Pond.

The site remained largely unexamined until 1963, when quarry workers found an elaborately carved jade pendant. This discovery led to archaeological excavations from 1964 to 1971, led by Dr. David Pendergast of Canada's Royal Ontario Museum. These excavations uncovered the city's two main plazas, thirteen structures, and numerous artifacts, revealing the complexity and wealth of this Maya community.

• —Plaza A (Sun God Plaza) — This was the primary ceremonial area until around 550 AD. It is surrounded by structures, including the Temple of the Green Tomb.
• —Structure A-1 (Temple of the Green Tomb) — On the west side of Plaza A, this temple contains an elite burial from around 550 AD. Archaeologists found nearly 300 jade objects, shell ornaments, stingray spines, and fragments of a Maya codex within this tomb.
• —Structure B-4 (Temple of the Masonry Altars) — This is the tallest temple at Altun Ha, standing 52 to 60 feet (16-17 meters) high. It is depicted on the logo of Belize's Belikin beer. The top offers views of the site and surrounding jungle. It was a ceremonial center for rituals.
• —Plaza B (Residential Plaza) — This plaza is next to the Temple of the Masonry Altars and was likely a focus of religious ceremonies.
• —Ancient Water Reservoir of Altun Ha — This large, Maya-made reservoir, also known as Rockstone Pond or Gordon Pond, supplied the city's water. Its bottom was lined with yellow clay to prevent water leakage. Crocodiles can sometimes be seen in its waters.
• —Northern Structures (C-1, C-2) — These structures are part of Zone C, which contains some of the earliest evidence of settlement at Altun Ha, dating to 900-800 BC.

Visit Altun Ha during Belize's dry season, from late November to May. The weather is favorable with less rainfall and cooler temperatures, suitable for exploring the ruins. This period is also Belize's peak tourist season, meaning more tours and services are available. Visiting during the shoulder months can offer a quieter experience with fewer crowds. Avoid the rainy season, from June to November, due to humidity and potentially slippery trails.

Altun Ha is about 31 miles (50 kilometers) north of Belize City. The easiest way to reach the site is by booking a guided tour from Belize City, Ambergris Caye, or Caye Caulker; these often include transportation and a guide. If driving, take the Philip Goldson Highway (Northern Highway) north from Belize City, then turn onto the Old Northern Highway. The final 2-mile stretch to the ruins is an unpaved dirt road. Public transportation does not go directly to Altun Ha, so a tour, taxi, or private vehicle is necessary.

At the site, the main plazas are generally flat. Some monuments have steep steps. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours to explore. Wear comfortable walking shoes, bring sun protection, and insect repellent. Gift shops selling local crafts are near the entrance.
