From Republic to British Stronghold

Ladysmith's origins date to 1846, when Sir Harry Smith, Governor of the Cape Colony, surveyed the area along the Klip River. By 1849, it was a settlement of four houses. In 1847, a group of Boers established the Republic of Klip River, with Andries Spies as their commandant. The British annexed this republic the same year. On June 20, 1850, it was proclaimed a township named Windsor, but this was changed on October 11, 1850, to Ladysmith, in honor of Juana María de los Dolores de León Smith, Sir Harry Smith's Spanish wife.

The Anglo-Boer War and its Legacy

Ladysmith became a location during the Second Anglo-Boer War. In 1899, British Lieutenant-General Sir George White established Ladysmith as his operational center to defend Natal against Boer forces. From October 30, 1899, the town endured a 118-day siege by Boer forces led by Commandant-General Piet Joubert. Communication lines and water supplies were cut, trapping approximately 26,000 soldiers and 8,000 civilians. Starvation and disease claimed lives before British relief forces, including Winston Churchill as a war correspondent, broke the siege on February 28, 1900. The town hall, built in 1893, served as a field hospital during the siege. The Qedusizi Dam, completed in 1997 on the Klip River, addressed the issue of floods and allowed for urban growth.

• —Ladysmith Siege Museum — This museum is in a building constructed in 1884 that served as a civilian ration post during the siege. It provides an overview of the four-month Siege of Ladysmith during the Second Anglo-Boer War. It displays artifacts, documents, uniforms, and firearms from the conflict, along with a diorama of the town during the siege.
• —Ladysmith Town Hall — This building, constructed in 1893, is an architectural monument. During the siege, it functioned as a field hospital. In front of the Town Hall, 'Castor' and 'Pollux,' two RML 6.3 inch Howitzer cannons, were used by the British during the siege.
• —Klip River Bridge (Murchison Street) — This bridge crosses the Klip River, a central feature of the town. The river's seasonal flooding historically posed challenges until the construction of the Qedusizi Dam.
• —Ladysmith Cenotaph — This memorial honors those who served and died in various conflicts. Its design and inscriptions link to the sacrifices made by the community.
• —All Saints Church — Built in 1902 from locally quarried flagstones, this Anglican church shows the Christian presence in the area around the time of the Anglo-Boer wars.
• —Statue of General Sir George White — This statue commemorates the British Lieutenant-General who made Ladysmith his center of operations during the Second Anglo-Boer War, defending Natal against Boer forces.
• —Burgher Memorial — This memorial was erected in honor of the Boers who died in battles near Ladysmith. It stands as a testament to the other side of the Anglo-Boer War narrative.

The best times to visit Ladysmith for warm-weather activities are from late February to mid-May and from mid-August to early October. Summer months, from November to March, have high daytime temperatures averaging around 28°C and are the primary rainy season. Winter (June to August) is the driest time of year. Days are sunny with temperatures around 20°C, but nights can be cold, dropping to about 4°C, so warm clothing is necessary for evenings. Avoid December, January, and February if you prefer to escape the peak heat and higher chance of rain.

Ladysmith is a three-hour drive northwest of Durban. A car is the most practical way to arrive and get around the region, especially for exploring the surrounding battlefields. As the commercial hub of the municipality, Ladysmith has a banking sector and industrial areas. The town serves as a halfway stop between Johannesburg and Durban, and a gateway to attractions like the Drakensberg Mountains and Spioenkop Nature Reserve. Many visitors stay in town and take day trips to nearby sites. The Ladysmith Farmers Market operates outdoors from June through October every Wednesday from noon to 4 PM and Saturdays from 8:30 AM to noon at the Ladysmith Downtown Pavilion. During winter months, an indoor market is held in the Rusk County Community Library.
