In 1552, the Red Castle of Eger faced a massive Ottoman
The secret register of lost identities
« In this city, three empires have mixed and no race has kept its original purity »— Johann Christoph von Jordán, imperial chronicler, 1688
The siege of Eger in 1552, heroically defended by István Dobó against 80,000 Ottomans, marks a turning point. But in 1596, the city finally capitulates. A unique period then opens: 91 years of forced coexistence between communities. Hungarian converts to Islam (potur) become Ottoman officials, Orthodox Serbian merchants control trade to the Balkans, German craftsmen maintain their corporate privileges, and Turkish dervishes settle in former churches transformed into mosques.
The reconquest of 1687 by the Habsburgs again disrupts this balance. Turkish elites flee, but mixed populations remain. The Austrian administration must identify who is who: who can claim their confiscated property? Who collaborated? Who resisted? The 1687 register, written by commissioner Johann Christoph von Jordán, becomes a crucial document: it maps the floating identities of a city where ethnic and religious boundaries blurred for a century.
You're not just buying an escape game. You're carrying a living guide — historical anecdotes, forgotten legends, key monuments, hidden architecture — unfolding as you go.
At each stop, places ordinary guides miss — secret façades, sculpted crests, alleys steeped in history.
Every riddle is rooted in a real historical fact or local legend. You leave with dozens of stories to tell.
Learn to read buildings — flamboyant Gothic, Baroque, Art Deco — like a real art historian, while having fun.
Walk through the city like a novel's character — every alley becomes a stage, every square a theatre.
A voice walks with you at every step, tells the story of each place, reads clues, adds a cinematic feel.
