The Selma to Montgomery marches in 1965 were a series of three protest marches organized to protest the inability of African Americans to register to vote and to demand the enforcement of the 15th Amendment. Initiated by local activists, they were quickly joined by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC).
