Before Barcelona, before Madrid, there was Tarraco. Founded in 218 BC as Scipio Africanus's military base, it became the capital of the largest Roman province in Hispania. Augustus himself stayed here, the circus held 30,000 spectators, and the amphitheater facing the sea offered gladiators the most spectacular setting in the Roman West.

Tarraco — six centuries of Roman dominion over the peninsula
In 218 BC, the Scipio brothers landed on the Catalan coast to cut Hannibal's supply lines during the Second Punic War. They established a fortified camp on a hill overlooking the sea — thus was Tarraco born. Within decades, this military camp became the administrative capital of Hispania Citerior, the largest Roman province in the Western Empire.
Under Augustus, who stayed between 27 and 25 BC to direct the Cantabrian Wars, Tarraco reached its peak. The provincial forum, the largest in Hispania, dominated the upper city. The Roman circus, 325 meters long, hosted chariot races at the heart of the city. The amphitheater, built in the 2nd century facing the Mediterranean, offered 14,000 seats for gladiatorial combat.
The Passeig Arqueològic, a walk along the Roman and medieval walls, offers a journey through twenty-two centuries of fortified history. The Praetorium, former palace of the Roman governor, and the circus vaults beneath the modern city reveal the colossal scale of Tarraco.
