San Fermín — from medieval procession to global fiesta
The San Fermín festivities trace their origins to the 12th century, when Pamplona's cattle fair coincided with religious celebrations honoring the patron saint of Navarre. Shepherds drove their bulls from the Santo Domingo corrals to the bullring, and young men ran ahead of them in daring sport — the encierro was born, not as tradition, but as practical necessity.
In 1926, Ernest Hemingway published The Sun Also Rises, a novel that immortalized the festival and the encierro. Overnight, Pamplona became a global myth. His statue now stands before the Plaza de Toros, and his favorite café, the Iruña, remains a literary pilgrimage site. The writer returned nine times to Pamplona — the city had bewitched him.
Today, the San Fermines attract over a million visitors each year from July 6 to 14. The encierro maintains its ancestral rules: departure at 8am sharp from the Santo Domingo corral, 875 meters of running, arrival at the Plaza de Toros.
