In Tarragona, the medieval cathedral rests on the foundations of a Roman temple dedicated to Augustus. Before it, a mosque. Before the mosque, a Visigothic sanctuary. Every stone tells a layer of history — an architectural palimpsest two thousand years deep.
Tarragona's cathedral is not a building — it is a layered cake of history. Beneath its Romanesque and Gothic foundations lie the walls of a monumental Roman temple dedicated to Emperor Augustus. Between the two, the Visigoths and then the Moors left their mark. This site has been sacred without interruption for over two thousand years — each conqueror preferred to build upon the last rather than destroy.
« "Every stone of this cathedral has already been prayed to in another language." »— — Inspired by Tarragona's archaeology
Atop Tarragona's hill, the Romans erected a monumental temple dedicated to the imperial cult of Augustus, at the heart of Tarraco's provincial forum. This temple with Corinthian columns, whose dimensions rivaled the greatest sanctuaries of Rome, dominated the city and the sea. Its foundations and column fragments are still visible in the current cathedral's cloister.
After Rome's fall, the Visigoths converted the temple into a Christian cathedral in the 6th century. During the Muslim conquest in the 8th century, the building became a mosque. When Christians retook Tarragona in 1118, they decided to build a new cathedral on this same sacred site — incorporating the Roman walls into their foundations, as if anchoring the new faith in ancient stone.
The current cathedral, begun in 1171 in a transitional Romanesque-Gothic style, boasts the largest cloister in Catalonia. Its sculpted capitals blend biblical scenes and fantastic creatures. The neighboring Jewish quarter, the Call, and the Pla de la Seu — the cathedral esplanade on the former Roman temenos — complete a journey through the layers of Tarragona, the ultimate palimpsest city.
