When nobles fought with towers
📱 1 to 10 phones · 1 team per phone · Independent codes
In the UNESCO-listed old town of Cáceres, every palace tells the story of a noble family's ambition. The Golfines, the Ovandos, the Ulloas waged a war of prestige where the height of towers measured power.
The Ciudad Monumental of Cáceres is an open-air museum where every alley hides a fortified palace. Here, noble families did not fight with swords but with stone — whoever built the tallest tower dominated the city. Isabella the Catholic herself had to intervene to end this vertical race.
« "Let the towers of all who dare defy royal authority be demolished." »— — Decree of Isabella the Catholic, 1477
After the Reconquista of Cáceres in 1229 by Alfonso IX of León, the city was divided among the noble families who had participated in its capture. Each lineage received a quarter and began building fortified mansions rivaling in grandeur. The Golfines de Arriba and de Abajo, the Ovandos, the Ulloas and the Saavedras transformed the hill into a chessboard of palace-fortresses.
By the 15th century, the rivalry reached its peak. Families built ever-taller towers to assert their dominance. Conflicts between lineages regularly bloodied the alleys. In 1477, the Catholic Monarchs ordered the desmochado — the beheading of all towers, except that of the Golfines de Abajo, loyal allies of the crown.
Paradoxically, it was this rivalry frozen in stone that preserved Cáceres. Too proud to modernize, the families left their palaces intact century after century. Today, the Ciudad Monumental offers one of the best-preserved medieval and Renaissance ensembles in Europe — a fortunate accident of human vanity.

You arrive in Cáceres · Ciudad Monumental, open the link on your phone, the story starts. It's the modern outdoor escape game: audio narration, camera puzzles, final code unlocked as a team. No install. No need to book a time slot.
Of course. Stop at a café, have lunch, resume later: your progress is saved. Many players bake a meal break into the trail, especially with families.
No, solo works very well. The outdoor escape game format in self-guided mode leaves room for introspection: read the story at your pace, hunt clues like a detective. 2-6 players is more social, solo is more contemplative.
Spring and autumn are the best seasons: mild temperatures, fewer tourists, gorgeous light. Summer is also great but go for early morning before 11 or late afternoon. Winter is perfectly playable, especially in southern cities — Cáceres · Ciudad Monumental often feels more authentic then.
