When men built above the void

In Cuenca, houses have defied gravity since the Middle Ages, clinging to the cliff above the Huécar gorge. How did medieval builders dare to build over the abyss? Unravel the mystery of the Casas Colgadas.
Cuenca's Casas Colgadas are not an architectural curiosity — they are an act of defiance. In the Middle Ages, when the city ran out of space between its two gorges, residents chose to build over the void rather than give up. Wooden beams driven into rock, balconies suspended sixty meters above the river — vertigo turned heritage.
« "Cuenca is a city that hangs by a thread — and that thread is stone." »— — Popular saying from Cuenca
Cuenca was founded by the Moors in the 8th century on a naturally defensive rocky promontory, surrounded by the deep gorges of the Júcar and Huécar rivers. After the Christian reconquest by Alfonso VIII in 1177, the city thrived through the wool and dye trade. The population grew rapidly, but space, limited by the cliffs, was scarce.
This is when the Casas Colgadas were born — houses whose wooden balconies jutted out over the void, supported by beams embedded in the limestone rock. What began as necessity became art. By the 15th century, these hanging houses formed a spectacular front above the Huécar gorge, visible from the Puente de San Pablo.
Today, the three remaining houses hold the Museo de Arte Abstracto Español, established by painter Fernando Zóbel in 1966. The Puente de San Pablo, a 19th-century iron footbridge that replaced a medieval stone bridge, offers the most dizzying view of these impossible structures. Cuenca has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.
