Mudéjar towers and love legend in Aragon's forgotten city
📱 1 to 10 phones · 1 team per phone · Independent codes
In 1217, Diego de Marcilla died of grief upon finding Isabel de Segura married to another. She died kissing him one last time. Teruel's UNESCO-listed Mudéjar towers have watched over this legend for eight centuries — and over Moorish bricklayers' secrets no one has yet pierced.
"Teruel exists" is the protest slogan of Spain's least populated provincial capital. But this small Aragonese city holds the peninsula's most exceptional Mudéjar ensemble: four bell towers of brick adorned with green and white ceramic, built in the 13th and 14th centuries by Moorish master masons who stayed after the Reconquest. The towers of San Martín and El Salvador, the cathedral and the church of San Pedro are UNESCO World Heritage listed. The Mausoleo de los Amantes in the Church of San Pedro holds the — real or legendary — remains of Diego and Isabel, Spain's "Romeo and Juliet".
« "Teruel's towers are the only minarets in Europe that ring Christian bells. That's the entire history of Spain in one brick." »— — Facing the Torre de El Salvador, 13th-century Mudéjar masterpiece
Mudéjar art was born from the coexistence of Christians and Muslims in medieval Spain. After the reconquest of Teruel by Alfonso II of Aragon in 1171, the alarifes — Moorish master masons — stayed and continued building with their techniques: exposed brick, glazed ceramic, polylobed arches and geometric patterns inspired by the Alhambra.
Teruel's four towers — San Martín (1316), El Salvador (1277), San Pedro and the cathedral — are gate-towers spanning the city's streets. Their decoration of lozenges, stars and interlacing green ceramic on red brick is unique in Europe. The Torre de El Salvador, with its two concentric towers linked by a staircase, is a masterpiece of medieval engineering.
The legend of the Lovers of Teruel, attested from the 13th century, tells of the impossible love between Diego de Marcilla and Isabel de Segura. In 1555, excavations in the Church of San Pedro unearthed two mummified bodies that tradition identified as the lovers. The current mausoleum, sculpted by Juan de Ávalos in 1955, has become a romantic pilgrimage site.

Yes, from age 6 with an adult reading puzzles aloud, and from age 12 on their own. Kids love the "find the camera clue" part — it's very visual, gets them genuinely involved.
Three hint levels per puzzle, with a small increasing time penalty. If truly stuck after level 3, you can skip the step (45-min penalty). The point: nobody stays blocked and goes home frustrated.
