The tomb that invented the word "mausoleum" — wonder of the world

Eight fragments of a monument that gave its name to all tombs
In 353 BC, Artemisia II, Queen of Caria and devoted wife of Mausolus, commissions the greatest Greek sculptors — Scopas, Bryaxis, Timotheus and Leochares — to build a tomb that would surpass all imagination. Forty-five metres high, Ionic columns, a 400-metre frieze and a quadriga at the summit. The monument is so extraordinary it enters the list of the seven wonders of the world. Destroyed by earthquakes in the 12th century, its stones were reused by the Knights of Rhodes to build the castle of Bodrum. But Artemisia had an eternal love message carved in the foundations in eight fragments.
« "Artemisia's love for Mausolus was so great it built a monument that time could not erase." »— — Pliny the Elder, Natural History, XXXVI
Mausolus, satrap of Caria from 377 to 353 BC, transfers his capital from Mylasa to Halicarnassus and sets about making it the most beautiful city in the eastern Mediterranean. He dies in 353 and his wife Artemisia II continues the mausoleum's construction, but dies herself two years later. The architects Satyros and Pytheos complete the monument: a base of 38 × 32 metres, 36 Ionic columns, a pyramid of 24 steps and a marble quadriga at the summit.
The mausoleum remains intact for 1,600 years before being destroyed by earthquakes. In 1402, the Hospitaller Knights of St John build the Castle of Bodrum (Castle of St Peter) using the mausoleum's blocks as a quarry. In 1846, Charles Newton of the British Museum excavates the site and brings back to London fragments of the frieze and monumental statues of Mausolus and Artemisia, now displayed at the British Museum.
